Introduction

SyScan Secure Coding is a competition that pits the participants secure programming skills against each other. The aim of this competition is to promote awareness of incorporating security as part of software development lifecycle. For this year, the focus will be on the development of web application and some of the secure coding practices surrounding it.

Dates

The competition will be held on 25 and 26 April 2012 as part of Syscan'12 Singapore. All teams are required to present their web application to the judges on 27 April 2012 and the results will be announced at the end of Syscan conference.

Game Play

Each team, consisting of 3 members, must develop a web application that fulfills a set of basic functionalities and ensures that the web application does not contain security issues. The web application will be based on Google’s App Engine for Java. Progamming with Python and Go is not allowed. In addition, only Google's AppEngine SDK can be used. Usage of third parties libraries or plugins are strictly forbidden.

Equipment

Each participant can bring one laptop for the competition. Internet access will be provided.

Scoring

All teams will start with a score of 0. Points will be awarded for each function that is successfully implemented and points will be deducted for each security issue found. The team with the highest score wins.
In the event of a tie, the Judges will decide on the winner based on innovative features, user friendliness, design and layout of the web application.

Rules

  1. No swapping of players
  2. No physical contact between players
  3. No harassment, threats, duels of any kind
  4. Have fun and learn
  5. Rules are subject to change without notice
  6. The ruling of the Judges is final in all cases
  7. No one is responsible for any real or perceived damage, insult or hurt feelings

Prizes

First Prize will be S$10,000 in cash.

Second Prize will be S$7,000 in cash.

Third Prize will be S$3,000 in cash.

Registration

The registration fee for each team is S$300. Registration will close on 28th February 2012.
